National School Counseling Week 2020
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Sometimes it is the people who no one can imagine anything of, who do things that no one can imagine.”
This is one of my favorite quotes because it speaks to the fact that it’s never too late to clean up your act or to improve yourself. More so, it stresses the fact that an underachiever can also become high achiever with the right type of guidance and support systems. So, in my work as a guidance counselor this quote resonates with me because we often tend to know the high achievers, the popular kids, or the kids that are failing. The middle, unassuming, somewhat average kids tend to not be noticed but I think when they get a little push from school staff whether it is by guidance or a teacher they can reach their full potential sooner. So yes anyone can be a star and anyone can be spectacular!
What are the most rewarding parts of your job?
The most rewarding parts of my job is when my students return to visit and tell me how they’re doing. It’s always refreshing to see the former graduates return from college breaks but what is even more inspiring is when my former “at-risk” students that either transferred out to attend alternative schools, or, got in trouble and became institutionalized, return stating that they graduated and are doing well for themselves. This often for me, is the true reward, when the kid who most thought would become nothing ends up being something. It feels great that these kids did not slip through the cracks and become a statistic of another student dropping out of HS.
